- Never wake up a dragon. If you do wake it up don't bother talking to it, just run!
- It's good to make friends with elves since they're good at fighting off nasty creatures and if you get horribly injured they're very good at curing people too.
- Don't get lost in a thick forest with giant spiders in it (In fact just avoid all thick forests with giant spiders in them at all costs!)
- If you go on a long trip make sure you have a hobbit with you, they can get you out of very difficult situations.
- It's good to make friends with people who own boats, it's always good to have a boat handy!
- It's also a good idea to make friends with smugglers as they can get you somewhere safe (providing you have enough money to pay them of course.)
- Rolling in a barrel down rapids can be a fairly good method of escaping from a prison.
- Barrels full of dead fish or outhouses, while slightly gross and a bit less than sanitary, are very good hiding places.
- Rings that can make you invisible are also handy in dire situations even if they are cursed.
- It's good to be good at archery-if you're lucky you might even kill a very large dragon and save your entire home town.

I just got back from seeing the Hobbit the Desolation of Smaug which is a movie I highly recommend as I found it very enjoyable and somewhat educational. Here are some things I learned from watching it.
