Why hugs were invented

"They invented hugs to let people know you love them without saying anything." -Bil Keane

So if you feel like telling someone you love them without saying anything (and as long as they consent of course) I'd say a hug is a lovely gift to give.

Music that speaks to the heart

"Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart." -Pablo Casals

I like the idea that music is a way of communicating beautiful things the heart. This quote made me think of a piece of music I heard the other day called Strangers on the Shore. I just think the piece is really beautiful. In a way I felt it did rather speak to my heart plus, as I was listening to it with my Mum who  I love very much, I feel that the music will always make me think of her. Wherever you are reading this, I hope there is a lot of music in your life and that it brings a lot of happiness to you.

Some good news from my home town

It’s not every day when the city where I was born makes national happy news! A baby black rhino (an endangered species) was born in a zoo not far from my family’s house on Christmas Eve. To read more about it read the article below. I wish everyone a very happy Saturday and an even better Sunday to come.

A little choir music in the spirit of Christmas

Whether it's singing it, listening to it or watching it, I've always loved choir music.  During the holidays I especially like listening to Kings College, Cambridge boys choir sing Christmas carols. For those who don't know, there is a service that the choir gives each year at Christmas called the Festival of 9 Lessons and Carols. The service is basically the boys singing carols interspersed with people giving various readings from the Bible. I like it because the music really is beautiful and it makes me feel happy to listen to it at Christmas. I've posted the video below which is the first part of the annual service, just because I like it the best. Whatever you celebrate during this season,  I wish you great joy and much happiness now and in the New Year!

Hope as a guide

"Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us."-Samuel Smiles

I like the idea of burdens being behind us and the only way to go is forward.  There's something nice about that image. Even if it doesn't mean the burdens are removed, I like the idea that there are better things to come and that burdens can become shadows in the past. They don't have to follow us around. If you're reading this and you happen to be going through something difficult, I hope that you know that the difficulty you face will eventually be behind you and that hope is always there to guide you.

“Normal” people

“The only normal people are the ones you don't know very well.”- Alfred Adler

I think it’s kind of funny when people talk about being/wanting to be normal. I figure if we’re all different, it’s impossible to truly be “normal.”  I’ve found that I’d really rather be myself than be “normal.” I’m abnormal and proud of it! I hope that wherever you are reading this, that you can be content to just be yourself because that’s something you can always be. I send everyone best wishes now and always.

One step at a time

“The elevator to success is out of order. You’ll have to use the stairs, one step at a time.” – Joe Girard

I'm rather glad success takes time. I feel like I wouldn't appreciate success as much if it didn't take a while to achieve. If you're reading this and there's something you're working towards I hope that you can take it one step at a time and enjoy your success when you reach it. I wish you all the best now and always.

A song that makes me feel sophisticated

The singer Edith Piaf was born today in 1915 and I always feel a sense of sophistication when I listen to her sing. I especially like the song Milord in that it always sounds cheerful to me. In an attempt to spread some cheer, I share the song here. I send everyone best wishes now and always.

My battle against a container

So I went to Target this evening and got some Monster trail mix (because it just is the most excellent trail mix, at least to me) and I get home and I. can't. open. the. stupid. trail mix. container. I swear the plastic lid thingy won't come off. I think they should have put some sort of warning signs on those boxes saying something like "Not suitable for people with fine motor skill difficulties!"

For about 30 seconds I seriously considered poking a hole in the top of the plastic jar but then as I thought about acting on that impulse, I had a mental image of the trail mix exploding out of the jar and going everywhere and then I wouldn't get any of it. So I'm off to strategize about how to open the jar-the battle continues!

Born for love

“We are all born for love. It is the principle of existence, and its only end.”- Benjamin Disraeli

As I believe that the best thing about life and the best gift he will have is the ability to love and to be loved, I want to take this opportunity to send a little bit of love out into the world by sending much love and best wishes to everyone who reads this.

Dreams can eventuallyl become inevitable things

I hope that wherever you are reading this that you have many dreams and that you believe in them and work toward them enough to make them inevitable. I send you best wishes now and always.

Fly me to the moon

The singer Frank Sinatra was born today and 1915 and to celebrate his birth I thought I’d share a song that he sang called “ Fly Me To The Moon”. I just think it sounds so nice when he sings it and it brings me a lot of happiness to hear it and I hope it has the same effect on others. I send everyone best wishes now and always.

Funny arguments

Sometimes arguments (especially between little kids and there parents) can be quite amusing as the video below demonstrates  Ok so perhaps the “arguments” in the video aren’t really angry ones. However, they did succeed in making me laugh and I hope it has the same effect on others. I send everyone best wishes now and always.

A picture of god

As it's Sunday and Sunday is typically a day people who practice Christianity go to church, I found the joke below that I thought was appropriate.

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom as the children drew pictures. The teacher would occasionally walk around and see each child’s artwork. As she approached one little girl who was working especially hard, she asked what the drawing was.
The little girl told her: “I’m drawing God!”
“But sweetie,” the teacher replied, “no one actually knows what God looks like.”
Automatically, the little girl continued drawing and said: “well, they certainly will in a minute!”

I guess on a philosophical level it could be argued that people who believe there is a god probably each have a unique view of what god is or looks like to them.  To me, god is just love and that's how God will always be to me.

A really fun concert

I just got back from singing at the Polymnia Choral Society’s Christmas concert and it was so much fun. We sang a mixture of traditional and modern holiday music which I really liked. My favorite song that we sang is called Mr. Santa. It’s just fun to sing that song. It was especially nice to see how music can help people feel happier. I hope that wherever you are reading this, that there is a lot of music in your life. I send you best wishes now and always.

A fun concert tomorrow!

If you're around Melrose, Massachusetts on 12/7 at 7:30AM (EST) I'd encourage you to come and listen to some lovely holiday music, come watch Polymnia Choral Society's winter concert at 46 Myrtle Street in Melrose. I love singing and especially singing holiday music and it's a lot of fun singing with a big choir and particularly Polymnia. Music always gives me a lot of joy and I feel that joy is best shared so if you're reading this and are in the area on 12/7 we hope to see you at our Winter Wonderland Concert. Tickets can be purchased online here: https://polymnia.org/tickets/.

A beautiful ride

“Life ain’t always beautiful but it’s a beautiful ride.” - Gary Allan”

I like the idea of life being an adventurous and beautiful ride. Even if things aren’t so great, the fun in life for me is finding the good and beautiful things in life. Whether it’s just hearing some nice music or seeing a wildflower grow, it’s nice to know that good things can always be found, it’s just a matter of seeking them out. Wherever you are reading this, I hope you find many good and beautiful things in life and I send you best wishes now and always.

Gus

My family recently got a puppy named Gus who is a border collie mutt and I was happy I got to officially meet him when I went back to Michigan for Thanksgiving. Gus is a funny dog. His idea of an awesome dinner is a substantial helping  of Puppy Chow followed by some of his own bedding for dessert! Eating habits aside Gus is always ready to play and I really do wish I could wake up with the same amount of energy he has.  Although I never quite knew what he'll do next when I interact with him, he's always a source of fun and he brings me a lot of happiness. If you're reading this, even if you don't have a pet, I hope that each day you are able to do things that are fun and make you feel happiest.

When one teaches

"When one teaches, two learn."- Robert Half

I've always enjoyed learning new things and helping people learn new things whenever possible. I do find that when I'm working with someone and helping them learn how to do something I do learn in that process as well. Plus, I feel like learning is best (and more fun) when shared. For example,  I once got lost and met someone who was going the same place I was trying to get to, in the end we both found it and I made a friend. Wherever you are reading this, I hope you learn new things each day and that you enjoy doing so.

To love others, love self

"Our first and last love is self love." -Christian Nestell Bovee

I think this quote is interesting because I figure that in order to love others one has to have self love first. Therefore, if you find you want to spread some love, I hope that you first do things that show love to yourself, whether it's doing things that make you feel happiest or treating yourself now and again to things that you enjoy.  Something I do each day just for me, is listen to music because I always feel happy when I do that. In the spirit of spreading the love,  to all who read this, I send you best wishes and much love always.

One of my favorite winter holiday songs

As it’s December 1st, I started thinking about holiday music I like and one song I particularly like is “O Tannenbaum” performed by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. I include it in this post to bring a bit of holiday cheer to everyone.

Some meals are best shared

I saw this news story about two men who invited an elderly lady who they saw eating alone to join them at their table instead. The woman had gone out to dinner to celebrate what would have been her 60th wedding anniversary had her husband still been alive. I liked the story because in the simple act of inviting her to eat with them, these men were able to help the woman know she wasn’t alone and that people cared. To read more about the story, follow this link: https://themindunleashed.com/2019/04/young-men-invite-widow-eat.html?fbclid=IwAR3sErsI_Q6Tu7grrKCyLw_7rHAaPIpI1jUy8rIcMr5qRVr_9aCKsOD99YA

Where there is love

"Where there is love there is life."-Mahatma Ghandi

To me, love brings life because love helps make everything grow and improve. I think that the nice thing about love is that it is lasting and helps make the world better. In that spirit, I send much love and best wishes to everyone who reads this.

Going home

I'm happy because tomorrow I'm going back home to Michigan. It's funny that even though I do feel like I have a home base near Boston, I still see Michigan as home. Somehow, wherever my family is will really be home to me. Wherever you consider to be home, I hope you are surrounded by many people who love you.

Use your voice!

"A voice is a human gift; it should be cherished and used, to utter fully human speech as possible. Powerlessness and silence go together." -Margaret Atwood

I'm all for having a voice and using it to promote good things. If there's something good you want to support and your voice will help make that good thing happen, then I hope that you use your voice until the thing you want to happen becomes a reality. I'm rooting for you and I send you best wishes now and always!

A fun retreat

I just got back from a retreat in New Hampshire with the Epilepsy foundation of New England. Really glad I went to the event because it was fun to see my friends from the foundation and also because it’s nice to be able to be with people that have a shared experience of having epilepsy. Plus, Before this I had never been to North Conway, New Hampshire where we stayed. North Conway is a town close to Mt. Washington and there’s a conservatory there that monitors wind speed. It was fun to go to that Conservatory’s museum.  I always like learning about new things and history in general. For visiting this museum I didn’t know that that Mt. Washington was one of the windiest places on earth. The other thing I really liked being able to do was to have an early Thanksgiving dinner as a group. It was fun to prepare and eat it together. All in all, it was a really nice weekend and I’m glad I was able to be part of it. Anyway, I send everyone much love now and always.

Thursday, November 14, 2019

A little vacation

I will not be posting for the next couple days because I’m going on a retreat for a people with epilepsy. I’m really excited because I will be visiting with friends and having fun! I’ll write all about it on Sunday. In the meantime, to everyone who reads this, I send you best wishes and much love always.

Share your courage

"Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others"- Robert Louis Stevenson

Although I don't know if I agree with the first part of this quote in that sometimes I think that if you're afraid sometimes it can help to talk about it. However I like the idea of sharing courage. If enough people share their courage and strength then in my mind, there's really no telling how many good things people can do for others. If there is something good you want to do,  I hope that you can feel you have the courage to do such things and to spread the courage you have, to influence others to create positive changes. I send you best wishes now and always.

The way to get things done

"The way to get things done is not to mind who gets credit for doing them." -Benjamin Jowett

I hope that if you're reading this and you want to do something that you do it regardless of whether you get credit for doing it. The way I see it,  as long as good things get done it doesn't really matter who does them. I send everyone best wishes now and always.

Armistice Day

As it's Armistice Day/Veterans Day I started thinking about World War I and how during one Christmas in 1914 soldiers stopped fighting and actually sang Christmas carols and got out of their trenches to greet each other. I realize that a few days after this they went right back to fighting each other but for that brief time these men treated each other as human beings. It makes me think of how despite our differences we can still be united and celebrate the good things we find in each other.  Anyway, I thank all veterans for their service.  To learn about the Christmas Armistice watch the video below.

My ageless inner chiled

"I'm happy to report that my inner child is still ageless." -James Broughton

I was reminded today that my inner child is still very much alive and well preserved when my friend gave me a toy minion which made me super happy.  Plus it was officially a Hawaiian minion because my friend found it in Hawaii and put a lei on it (after all, it's got to be officially Hawaiian if it has a lei on it Although I am fully aware that minions are cartoon character there's something about them that always makes me happy. I hope that wherever you are reading this, I hope that you will always find happiness in small things and that you never lose your inner child.

Trust yourself

“Trust yourself, you know more than you think you do.”-Benjamin Spock

I’ve found that if you’re going to trust anyone in life, trust yourself.  I know that I for one don’t always do or say the smartest things but I do trust myself to get where I need to be. I figure if I can’t trust myself, how can I trust other people? I find that I have a lot of faith and trust in people. Even if people aren’t always trustworthy, I still trust in their potential for goodness.  That’s what keeps me believing in people. In that spirit, I send much love and best wishes.

A chef's surprise

I saw this lovely clip of a young girl who wanted to meet the chef Gordon Ramsay. The young girl has been fighting cancer and what helped her cope with the treatment is watching Gordon Ramsay's cooking shows. I like seeing what helps people cope in times of crisis and difficulty. People really are resilient and they find so many ways of finding happiness even in the direst of circumstances. Anyway, I hope this young woman recovers so she can have dinner with Chef Ramsay. I send best wishes and much love to her and everyone.

Music that gives me more energy

The American composer John Phillip Sousa was born today in 1854 and he's known for his stirring marches. While I know these marches sound a bit militaristic, I somehow feel more energized when I listen to them. I especially like a piece he composed called "The Washington Post March". It makes me think of parades for people that do heroic things. There's just something about that music that cheers me when I hear it because well, it makes me want to stand up a cheer!   Anyway, wherever you're reading this, I hope you have many things in your life that cheer you.  I send you best wishes now and always.

Things that brightened my day

Today I was reminded of how important it is to do things can really brighten one's day. Today those things included:

  • Taking time to go for a walk with one of my friends who is also my coworker.
  • Singing in the community choir I'm part of.
  • Volunteering for a candidate running for mayor of the city where I live. I was so pleased to find out later that he won the election.
Wherever you are reading this, I hope you can always find things that brighten your day. I send you best wishes now and always.

The only courage that matters

"The only courage that matters is the kind that gets you from one moment to the next." -Mignon McLaughlin

It can take a lot to get from one moment to the next but it's nice to know that it's possible to get to the next moment and that next moment might lead to something better and that's what keeps me hopeful. I send everyone best wishes now and always.

Just a bit of sweetness for a Sunday

Cats can be pretty funny and very sweet so I thought I'd share a video that shows how cats have both these qualities. Plus, the video made me feel good inside and I hope it has the same effect on others.

Turning back time

I always thought the idea of Daylight Savings Time and the fact that we turn back the clocks an hour in the winter (at least where I live). When I was younger I thought it was kind of cool that time could go back and as I got older I felt it was just nice to get an extra hour of sleep. My point is, if you live somewhere that uses Daylight Savings Time, don't forget to turn your clock back 1 hour tonight.

Friendship is worth it!

"There is nothing worth the wear of winning, but laughter and the love of friends." -James Boswell

Outside of family, friends are the best because I feel that genuine friends are always there in times of need and it's lovely to have fun with them and I like doing nice things for them and making them laugh. Doing those things gives me a lot of happiness.  Anyway, this quote makes me thing of a song I really like called "Everybody Needs A Best Friend" because like my friends do, this song always makes me feel happy.

On true laughter

"A wonderful thing about true laughter is that it just destroys any kind of system of dividing people”.-John Cleese

In the spirit of this quote and in the hope of encouraging laughter I include the joke below. Happy Sunday everyone!

Difficulties and miracles

“Out of difficulties grow miracles.“ -Jean de la Bruyere

Since I’ve found that happier things come after difficulties, it makes me value the difficulties for encouraging growth and look for miracles in random places because going through difficulties makes finding the miracles (or simply happy things.) feel that much better. To everyone who reads this, I send you best wishes now and always.

A sign of success

“As my father used to tell me, the only true sign of success in life is being able to do for a living that which makes you happy.”- Al Yankovich

I  feel like happiness should be a measurement of success because I feel that doing whatever makes you feel happiest helps make life more fun and fulfilling. In that spirit, I hope that each day brings you an opportunity to do the things that make you feel happiest and I send you best wishes now and always.

Keep stillness

"In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you." -Deepak Chopra

Even if it's not always easy, there is something nice about being at peace even in times of difficulty. That's something I'm working on. I figure as long as there's at least one thing in every situation that I can find to be calm about it reminds me that things will work out eventually and that idea helps me feel stronger.  In that spirit, to all who read this, I wish you peace now and always.

If the world seems cold to you

"If the world seems cold to you, kindle a fire to warm it." -Lucy Larcom

How not to despair

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it, always"-Mahatma Gandhi

It's nice to know that truth and love survive everything. It really does give me a lot of hope to keep that in mind when I get frustrated with the state of things. I figure as long as there are people to love and who  love others, there is always hope and that idea sustains me. Anyway, to all who read this, I wish you the very best now and always.

Resistance failure

"I can resist everything except temptation."-Oscar Wilde

I identified with this quote today as I too couldn't resist the temptation of the trail mix at Target. Seriously, not to sound too much like  commercial for Target stores but they do have excellent trail mix. I suppose trail mix not such a harmful temptation if eaten in small increments. Anyway, if there's something nice that you wish to indulge in that isn't significantly harmful to oneself or others, I say go for it!

Things to be thankful for today

”I thank you God for this most amazing day, for the leaping greenly spirits of trees, and for the blue dream of sky and for everything which is natural, which is infinite, which is yes.” E. E. Cummings

The things mentioned above are all things I’m. Very thankful for and I wish everyone the happiest of Mondays!

A fun day out to Peggy’s Cove

Today I went with my cousin and her family to visit Peggy’s Cove which has beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and a very old and appropriately picturesque lighthouse. There’s something nice about watching water especially oceans because it’s very soothing to me. Today was also nice because my cousin and her family decided to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving Day 1 day early as I’m leaving to go back to Boston tomorrow. To me, regardless of what meal it is, it’s always lovely to share a meal with people one loves. To everyone in Canada I wish you the happiest of Thanksgivings and if you’re reading this, I hope that on a regular basis, you have the opportunity to share a meal with people you love.

Greetings from Halifax!

I’m currently visiting my cousin and her family in Halifax, Nova Scotia for Canada’s Thanksgiving weekend. Today was really fun as I went with my cousin and her soon to see the Citadel which is a large fort/military museum in Halifax. It was really interesting to learn about the fort and what soldiers’ lives were like there and also about Canadian military history in general. After seeing the Citadel my cousin and I went to see the Downton Abbey movie which, if you’re into British history or the TV show Downton Abbey, I highly recommend seeing the movie! To round out a really nice day, my cousin, her husband and 2 sons and I went out for a lovely dinner at a nice French bistro in downtown Halifax. All in all it was a very nice day and I’m happy I was able to share it with members of my family. To all who read this, I send you best wishes and much love always.

Penguins love bubbles!

I saw this clip of some penguins waddling around in bubbles and it seemed like they were having fun. In any case it made me happy to watch them so I post the clip here in the hope it brings happiness to others! Happy Friday everyone!

The only force

"Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend" -Martin Luther King Jr.

I think the best thing about love is that it can withstand so much.  I like how love unites people and helps them grow together. In the spirit of spreading such love, I send much love to everyone who reads this and I wish everyone the very best now and always.

Little good things

Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world." -Desmond Tutu

I like doing little good things for people like holding doors or smiling or giving hugs or giving money to people in need. It just feels so nice to do those things and although I may never know the true effect the actions I take have on other people, I feel that my life is made better by doing those things. If there is something you want to do that's good and that helps other people, I hope you pursue that action. I send you best wishes now and always.

Some advice for the day

"Follow your passion, stay true to yourself, never follow someone else’s path unless you’re in the woods and you’re lost and you see a path then by all means you should follow that." -Margaret Mead

I'm all about finding paths even if it means I get lost, I've found I'm better for the getting lost. If you're reading this, wherever it is you're trying to go and whatever it is you're trying to do in life, I hope you always find a path and pursue it!

The best thing in the world

"Love is the best thing in the world and the thing that lives the longest."-Henry Van Dyke

Love really is the greatest of things. It makes me feel so happy that I'm able to love and be loved.  For me love is worth any effort because the rewards of loving people are truly great. The nicest thing about love is that it's something that everyone can do. In that spirit, I send much love to everyone.

Whales make rainbows

In continuation of the theme of finding rainbows in random places, I saw this clip of people watching a whale in the ocean and every ime the whale spouted water it looked like a rainbow was being created. I just like seeing beauty in nature like that. Plus, there's something nice about watching blue water. Even from a distance, it makes me feel peaceful

A white rainbow

I just read a story about a white rainbow that suddenly appeared in Scotland. I thought it was really pretty and felt like sharing it here for the heck of it.  Apparently the rainbow only appeared for about 5 minutes but I guess it just shows that beauty, even if it's fleeting, can be found everywhere in nature.  To read more about the white rainbow follow this link (https://abcnews.go.com/International/photographer-captures-stunning-shot-rare-white-rainbow-moor/story?id=43738018&fbclid=IwAR3nyIsnSzQE35w2d9BQvUCS0Nl1EsX-OUV7k1QNV16zUg_eTSujCtwbYBo)

You can do what you have to do

"You can do what you have to do, and sometimes you can do it even better than you think you can."-Jimmy Carter

It's funny because there are times when I didn't think I could do something but because I had to do it, it got done. I think if people want to do something enough then they make it happen. That's the thing I like most about people, we all have the ability to do so much, especially when the things we do are things we feel we have to do. People always find a way. If there's something good that you want to do, I hope that you think of it as something you have to do. In thinking about it that way, I feel like you'll find a way to make good things happen. I wish you the very best now and always.

Finding happiness in the most random ways

I saw this clip of a baby laughing at someone ripping up a bunch of paper for the baby. It was just really sweet to see how much it made the baby laugh. Seeing people, especially babies laugh always brightens my day and I hope it has the same effect on others. I send best wishes and much love to everyone.

The power of a group hug

I saw this clip of a little boy who had survived Hurricane Dorian and was greeted by his classmates with a spontaneous group hug. It made me think of how hugs make situations brighter in being outward, tangible ways of showing support for people in times of crisis. I know that so far, whenever I'm on the receiving end of a hug, I've always felt really safe and protected and at peace. I hope it's something everyone gets to experience. Anyway,  I send everyone best wishes now and always.

Happiness comes....

"Happiness comes from living as you need to, as you want to. As your inner voice tells you to. Happiness comes from being who you actually are instead of who you think you are supposed to be.”  -Shonda Rhimes

In that spirit, I hope that each day you can do something that makes you feel happiest and I send you best wishes now and always.

Stick to it

"Everyone's dream can come true if you just stick to it and work hard."-Serena Williams

I find that I have many dreams and while they may not have all come true, it's nice to know that my work does pay off in reaching the dreams. Plus, I find that I'm happier when I reach the dreams because I know I had to struggle to reach them and am better for the struggle. If you've got something good that you want to do, I hope that you reach your dream and feel better for doing so. I send you best wishes now and always.

A lovely surprise

People who know me, know that I really like Minions and so my coworkers are so awesome they got a real Minion to visit me and the Disability Policy Consortium staff at our staff meeting today. They did this because I've been working at the DPC for 5 years now. I love my coworkers very much  and with or without Minions I feel really happy and privileged to work for the DPC.

A little conductor

I saw this clip of a little girl who was so moved by a choir singing that she started to conduct them while standing behind the singers. It was just really sweet to see how the child really felt the emotion in the music and how it showed in the child's face and the child's actions. Music clearly has the capacity to touch everyone.

Kids are smart

I've always maintained that kids are smarter than people sometimes think they are. So, when I saw this joke, it reinforced this belief. I wish everyone the happiest of Saturdays

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer. ‘This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it you.’ The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, ‘Which do you want, son?’ The boy takes the quarters and leaves. ‘What did I tell you?’ said the barber. ‘That kid never learns!’ Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. ‘Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?’ The boy licked his cone and replied, ‘Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!’

Happiness in a hospital

I saw this clip of a teenager who was undergoing cancer treatment and was thus unable to attend a Jonas Brothers concert. After an Instagram campaign was launched, the Jonas Brothers went to visit the teen in the hospital. I always like these types of stories where a celebrity visits kids in hospital just because it's lovely to see kids/teens really happy, even in a place that can be scary and uncomfortable. It shows me that joy can be found anywhere. I wish everyone a very happy Friday and a lovely Saturday to come.

Joyful twins

I saw this news item about a set of twin boys named Milo and Charlie McConnel who have Downs Syndrome and how the boys' parents post about their children's progress so that people can see that having Down  Syndrome really isn't a setback and should be more accepted. Plus, the boys are really sweet and made me feel good inside to see them so happy.  If you want to learn more about these twin boys, watch the clip below.

One of the luckiest things

"One of the luckiest things that can happen to you in life is, I think, to have a happy childhood."-Agatha Christie

I like this quote because I did have a happy childhood and I do feel better for it. My siblings and I had a lot of fun traveling with my parents, playing sports, manning lemonade stands and generally having fun. It's true that not every part of my childhood was happy but I feel like I really appreciated when things were fun. In that way, even if and when people have hard times,  I like to think that we appreciate when things are going well more because of having the experience of going through hard times. So in a small way, I think we all have luck inside us that allows us to appreciate and be happywhen things go well, I send best wishes and much love to all who read this.

Find the good all around

"Find the good. It’s all around you. Find it, showcase it and you'll start believing it."-Jesse Owens

I like find the good things around me, whether it's just people smiling or seeing flowers grow or seeing people helping each other in some way. Every time I see things like that it warms my heart.  Wherever you are reading this I hope that you can find many good things around you and that your life is better for it.

If you have only one smile

“If you have only one smile in you give it to the people you love.” -Maya Angelou

I’m all for smiling because it feels good, it’s contagious and it’s something everyone understands. I hope that you can find many reasons to smile each day. Even if you only smile once, that one smile can still spread in making others around you feel good. I send you best wishes now and always.

The power of an hour's reading

"I've never known any trouble than an hour's reading didn't assuage" -Arthur Schopenhaur

I do find that reading something when I'm worried or upset does help me feel better. Whether it's reading a short poem or a saying or something funny,  it does help me. Although it won't solve all my problems, having a distraction to take me a way from a problem for a few minutes helped me focus more when I came back to the problem at hand. Plus, if I found something to read that was related to the problem I faced, then it helped give me new perspective. I'd encourage reading whenever possible, especially in times of difficulty as an escape and as a potential bringer of solutions to problems.  Regardless of whether you're facing a problem, I send you best wishes now and always.

Right where I intended to be

"I may not have gone where I intended to go but I think I have ended up where I intended to be." -Douglas Adams

I've found that life has taken me to unexpected places. When I was young I didn't think I'd move out of Michigan permanently and live on my own. I'd traveled outside the US  but Michigan was always home.  Honestly though, wherever my family is, always feels like home. Anyway,  after, having lived away from home it does feel like I wound up where I meant to go, even if I didn't always know where it was that I wanted to go at first. Throughout my adult life I've always wanted to and worked towards helping people and I now have a job that allows me to help people every day. So even if I live far from my immediate family, I do feel I've ended up where I initially intended to be. Wherever you are reading this I hope that you find where you need to be, even if it is by a roundabout route! I send you best wishes now and always.

The aim of life

“The aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware, joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware.”-Henry Miller

I hope that wherever life takes you, that you find a lot of joy in it and that you were always aware of the good things that are in your life and all the people that care about you. I send you much love and best wishes now and always.

Another sunset

I saw this sunset the other day in downtown Melrose, MA and I thought it was rather lovely. I always like seeing nice sunsets because it reminds me of how people I love are living under the same sunset and sky. Anyway, I liked this particular sunset because it made the sky have so many different colors at once and it made me feel hopeful. I wish everyone every happiness and lots of light.

If everything was perfect

"If everything was perfect, you would never learn and you would never grow."- Beyonce Knowles

I like this quote because even though it's good to want to improve yourself, it's nice to know that perfection isn't the best goal.  Besides being perfect would be really boring as there would be nothing left to work towards.  At least for me, reaching a goal and then searching for the next goal is what makes life fun.  If there's something you're working towards, I wish you the very best in your work!

Music reaches out

I saw a news story about a boy who was so impressed about a classical music concert that he was attending, he shouted “wow!” at the end of the concert. What made this special is that the boy was autistic and considered largely nonverbal. So for him to shout “wow” was a really big deal. The director of the society that put on the concert was so impressed by the boy’s reaction to the music that he arranged to have a private concert for the boy and his family in their home. It was lovely seeing in the clip below how happy the boy was listening to the music. It shows how music can reach out and touch people that were previously thought to be unreachable.

Just a little silliness for a Monday

"I installed a skylight in my apartment... the people who live above me are furious!"-Steven Wright

I thought this quote was pretty funny and it made me think that the people in the apartment above mine are jolly lucky I have no idea (or plans to learn) how to install a skylight in my ceiling. Had I the knowledge and the tools (and slightly too much alcohol) I might actually consider acting upon the impulse. Even then I'd probably decide to lie down until the urge passed. Anyway,  I wish everyone the best of Mondays!

A joke for a Sunday

Although it's a bit unorthodox, I thought this joke was a funny Sunday joke. I send everyone best wishes and much laughter now and always.

The Reverend Lewis was completing a temperance sermon and with great expression he said, 'If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river.'

With even greater emphasis he added, 'And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river.'

Finally, the Reverend Lewis said, 'And if I had all the whisky in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river.'
He sat down.
The Curate, Roger Marples, then stood up very cautiously and announced with a smile, 'For our closing hymn let's sing number 365, "Shall We Gather at the River."

Coming home happiness

I saw this clip of a monkey being reunited with their family. It was so nice to see how happy the animals were to be back together again. It made me think of how good it feels to be back with my family when I go to visit them. All I know is that it really is lovely being home and with people that love you.

Keep on going and the chances are you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I have never heard of anyone stumbling on something sitting down. -Charles Kettering

A window to the world

I saw this story about a boy who cannot go outside his house as he’s recovering from a transplant. Despite his current inability to go outside, the world has apparently come to him through neighbors, performers and friends coming to visit him outside his window. I really liked this story as it shows how good people can be to each other. I’ve enclosed the clip below with the story for all those interested. I send best wishes to everyone now and always.

Poem for the day

I saw this short poem, or perhaps it's part of a longer poem but anyway, I really liked it and thought I'd share it here. It reminds me that if there's something I want to do that helps someone, even if there's a risk involved, there's also a chance for success.

“There is freedom waiting for you,
On the breezes of the sky,
And you ask "What if I fall?"
Oh but my darling,
What if you fly?”
-Erin Hanson

A beautiful sunset

I was walking past a pond in Melrose when I saw this sunset and thought it was really beautiful. Since I believe beautiful things like sunset are made all the better when they are shared, I thought I'd bring the sunset to you in this blog. I like to think that at some point we all are living under the same sun, moon and stars and in that way we are all united. Anyway, I send best wishes to everyone now and always.

Never be in a hurry

"Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset." St. Francis de Sales

I like this quote because it reminds me of things I'd like to improve on. I think even when things seem ever so serious, as long as I can take a step back for just a moment and think about what I need to do, situations I need to deal with seem a lot more manageable. If you're going through something difficult, I hope that you can find a sense of peace in the midst of your trouble. I send you much love now and always.

Life as an adventure

“Security is mostly a superstition. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” – Helen Keller

There's something nice about thinking of life as an adventure. Sometimes when I go through difficulties I like thinking that I've come through a lot and it means that I can face what comes next. I figure as long as I have people around me to love and be loved by, the adventure is always worth it. Wherever you are reading this I hope that life leads you through many adventures and I wish you much love now and always.

A day with napping potential

"You know what Sunday is, it’s a day with a lot of potential for naps.” – Polly Horvath

It's said that Sunday is a day for rest and so that got me thinking about naps. It's funny because when I was really young and nap time was a designated part of the day, I remember I used to hate it because I wanted to be up and about and doing the more exciting things grownups were doing. Now I'm a bit older having a nap often seems like a rather nice idea. I figure everything seems better when one is well rested.  Wherever you are reading this, I hope you have that you allow yourself time to rest today.

British Food I like

Just for the heck of it I thought I'd share a list of some foods from the UK that I like. Although these foods may not be the most nutrient-rich, I think they still taste nice and as long as I eat them in small doses, I eat them without guilt. However, I feel like the real reason I like them is because they remind me of my family and lovely trips I've had with my family to England to visit grandparents and relatives there. Anyway, so here's the list:

  • Jaffa cakes: They're these lovely biscuits (cookies to you Yanks!) and they have chocolate on top and orange filling in the middle so eating them is sort of like a nice surprise taste-wise.
  • Ice creams with flakes. When I was really young my parents would take me and my sister and brother to a playground not far from the house where my grandparents lived and there was this ice cream truck that seemed to always be there and my mum and dad would get us all vanilla ice creams with flakes which are basically fat sticks of chocolate shavings which are super good.
  • Ploughman's lunch. It's basically a salad plate (sometimes served on a cutting board) with lettuce, ham or perhaps lamb, tomatoes, cheese, fruit bread and pickles. (More on the pickles in a bit.)-I like ploughman's lunch because it makes me think of what people ate historically when they farmed. I always liked learning more about history.
  • Cadbury Chocolate: My mum once took my siblings and I to a Cadbury Chocolate Factory and although it may have made our stomachs ache, it was pretty fun to see how different types of chocolates are made.
  • Scotch egg: They are basically a hard boiled egg, surrounded by ham and the whole thing is breaded. It just tastes good to me.
  • Branston Pickle-This is a type of pickle relish. It is an acquired taste but it's really good with cheese and I like it!
  • Fish & Chips-this is so stereotypically British but I still like it.
  • Fruit Pastilles-They're sort off like gumdrops but better. My grandpa used to take me with him to the village shop to get a newspaper for his neighbor who was housebound. At the shop he'd allow me to pick out 1 sweet (candy) to take home with us. For whatever reason I usually picked fruit Pastilles so now when I think of them I think of my grandpa.
  • Lemon barley water. It's basically a mix that you put in cold water and tastes like lemonade. It's very refreshing on a hot day.
  • Custard-you can eat it hot or cold. Somehow I think it's better hot but I digress. Anyway, my grandma used to put it on most of her desserts and despite my best efforts I've never quite been able to truly replicate the custard she made but maybe sometime I'll get it right!

A Funny video for a Friday

As it’s Friday (and because I think Fridays are days for a little silliness), I thought I’d share the video below because it made me laugh. I wish everyone the happiest of Fridays!

Life is wonderful

I heard this song by Jason Mraz called "Life is Wonderful" I liked it because it talks about how you have to go through difficulties to really appreciate the good things in life, like love. Love is the best thing there is and it's worth any struggle.  Anyway, listening to this song made me feel good inside and out. Wherever you're reading this, I hope you experience all the wonderful things life has to offer, especially love. To that end, I send you much love now and always.

A wish to spare you from evil things

"May the forces of evil become confused on the way to your house." -George Carlin

I post this quote here with a simple wish that no evil comes your way and if it tries to do so, it gets lost! I send you best wishes now and always.

Strangers can make people feel happier

I was just reading a really interesting article about how scientific studies have proven that interacting with strangers can help people feel better. The study found that people feel happier when they interact more with people around them, even if the people around them are strangers. There's just something about interacting that helps people feel better. I like to think this is because we're all connected in some way and as such, people need to strengthen that connection with each other to feel better.  In the spirit of making a virtual connection, I send best wishes and much love to all who read this.

If you want to read more about the study I described, follow this link. https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-surprising-boost-you-get-from-strangers-11557567000?shareToken=st297cda154e814cdca066e361a4e13800&mod=djmc_pktff

Making history while overcoming the past

I saw this clip of the gymnast Simone Biles making history by winning her 6th National Gymnastics Title by landing a triple double (2 flips and three twists in a floor exercise). She also performed a double-double dismount on the balance beam (2 twists and 2 flips in midair). It was really cool to watch her performance because she has overcome so much adversity. I'm really glad that she won all those 6 titles and the things people will remember he most for is that she has made history and is a brilliant gymnast. It shows me that no matter what happened in your past, it doesn't define your future and so many great things are possible as long as you're willing to work towards them and not stop until your goal is reached.  To all who read this, whatever goal you are working towards, I wish you every success in your work and I send you best wishes now and always.

Here and now

"The time to be happy is now, and the place to be happy is here."-Robert Green Ingersoll

For me, there's something nice about knowing that there's a possibility for happiness wherever you are even if that possibility seems dim, it's still there. For me, looking for that happiness has helped make a lot of difficult situations feel better. I may not always have found that happiness but when I have found it,  At the very least, it gives me hope that things will get better. Wherever you are reading this, I hope that you search for and find happiness wherever you are.

Accessible music

I just saw a story of a woman named Gaelynn Lea who plays the violin and uses the songs she write not just to entertain people but also to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. Gaelynn  has a brittle bone disease called osteogenesis imperfecta and has learned to play the violin as if it were a cello, as the violin is too long for her to rest it on her shoulder.  Her music really is beautiful and it makes me think of how music can be a force for change. Plus I really like her message that if you really want to do something you can always find a way to do it. To learn more about Gaelynn Lee watch the clip below.

Something to remember

"Just remember, you can do anything you set your mind to, but it takes action, perseverance, and facing your fears." -Gillian Anderson

One thing I like about people is that they can get through so many things and do so many great things. If there is something good that you want to do, I hope that you pursue it. Whatever good thing it is you want to do, I wish you every success now and always.

Best friend

I heard this song by the singer Jason Mraz called "Best Friend" and it made me think of all the people who are my friends and how my life is better because they are all a part of my life. They really are the best.  To all who read this, I hope that you have people in your life that show you lots of love. I for one, send you much love now and always.
